Tribute Summon

Monarch

🇯🇵 帝・🇨🇳 帝

Tribute monsters that gain an effect when summoned, (usually) removing an opponent's card(s) from the field. All of them apart from Delg and Kuraz must be tribute summoned for this effect. Tribute fodder can be taken from the opponent with Soul Exchange/The Monarchs Storm Forth, or generated for free with Treeborn Frog (Commonly referred to as Frognarchs, though that isn't purely just the Monarch archetype), although using Frog forces you to miss out on some powerful new continuous support cards such as Escalation of the Monarchs, March of the Monarchs and The Monarchs Erupt.

General Counter Tips:

- Hard loses to Droll & Lock Bird Droll & Lock Bird in most cases

- Heavily reliant on spells to get going, The Monarchs Revolt The Monarchs Revolt is the number one priority to stop above all

- Board wipes such as Harpies Feather Duster or Raigeki are great counters, as Monarchs don't have any inherent S/T negation, and March of the Monarchs March of the Monarchs is seldom played to prevent Monarch monster's destruction from S/T

- Monarchs going second are capable of easily breaking your own board with The Monarchs Stormforth The Monarchs Stormforth or Spell Card "Soul Exchange" Spell Card "Soul Exchange", and worthy of saving your own Spell negation effects so they do not use your own monsters for their tribute summons. SCSE also has a unique effect compared to Stormforth in that any towers type monsters (i.e. Lunalight Liger Dancer) can be used for their own tribute summons.

Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring

List of Priority: 1. Revolt 2. Pantheism's GY effect 3. Tenacity 4. Pantheism's discard to draw two

Ashing Revolt generally stops most their plays if they're going first, don't ever let them get to use Revolt. Pantheism's discard to draw is usually Ash bait, so avoid doing so.

Droll & Lock Bird Droll & Lock Bird

Any point after adding one to hand

Monarchs hard lose to Droll most the time. Revolt, Pantheism's both effects, Tenacity, and Eidos all add to hand. Ideally you Droll before Revolt is ever activated, as it's a Painful Choice for Monarchs.

Forbidden Droplet Forbidden Droplet

N/A

Bad counter to Monarchs. Ehther the Heavenly Monarch is the only one with a quick effect to tribute summon during the opponent's turn, but doesn't come up often. Droplet isn't totally useless since it decreases monster's attack, but generally not good.

BadView Edit
Harpies Feather Duster Harpies Feather Duster

Domain and/or Erupt

Floodgates that prevent pretty much all decks from being able to do anything. Unless the Monarch player is running something like Solemn Judgement, Monarchs have zero S/T negations and can't stop this.

GreatView Edit
Infinite Impermanence Infinite Impermanence

1. Mega Zaborg if they're running that build (you can easily tell because they actually have an extra deck) 2. Erebus' handrip/spin 3. Eidos' search, so long as you know for a fact they don't have either Domain or Erupt in hand.

Mega Zaborg builds will dump their own ED monsters via effect to do the same to yours. This build will also use ED monsters that have GY effect, such as Garura for even more advantage or disruption. Erebus' handrip/spin is pretty self explanatory, and will be down one card if the Monarch player goes first. Eidos is only usable so long as the aforementioned cards in the chokepoint are in their hand, otherwise not very good.
